Camped last month, I am re-thinking what to bring. I like that I don't have to cook at the Bean, leaving the kitchen home is nice. I have been playing/rehearsing/jamming about twice a week, but haven't played with any blues bands in a while. I'm going over blues tunes.

I have most of my equipment ready. Working on adding crew. Should have four more who have never been down. We'll swamp Skinker Ridge.  Any one been in touch with Jawbone? We miss him on the Ridge.

Jawbone says he won't be there until the exchange rate gets better.

Has anyone heard from Delta Don?

Contacted Don today and asked if he was coming. He replied, "I don't know." He left a pretty big hole in the jam scene last year, sure hope he makes it.

Tuesday through Sunday most likely. Not sure yet.

If anyone has a particular song you want me to learn on bass for the jams, make your requests :-)

Leland, remind me what those two songs are that you like to do? I'll make sure I remember how to play them.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Hey Jim, let's do Trouble in Mind.  I play it and the song runs through my mind daily (along with Margaritaville Big smile).  Trouble is easy to play, can support a nice base line and gives us an opportunity for a slow blues to off set the hard driving fast stuff.

I'm really looking forward to the Bean this year. It will be the one year anniversary of me playing music again. I had almost completely stopped playing for some time leading up to last year's Bean due to various issues. I had so much fun playing at the Bean last year that I picked up my bass and have been playing minimum 1-2 hours EVERY day since last year.

We will be at the Bean at least by Sunday and stay through the following Monday.  I also am minimizing what I bring.  Started that last year and see some more opportunities for trimming down this year.  Maybe in a couple years it will be just an acoustic guitar, some beef jerky, and a mason jar of home brew. Talking real blues.

1 to 2 hours?  You should be in the awesome class by now!  I play maybe an hour a month and not an hour at a time but 5 minutes here or there.  I plan too but I procrastinate my way into the next day.

Hey Folks, I need some guidance here.  Weigh in on equipment.  If you recall, last year I put a PA100 amp (narrow, verticle looking thing on a stand) and ran the wireless mic to it for vocals.  I brought that after our discussions to down size our electronics.

Should I pack it up for this year?  Is someone else already bring a PA and mine would be extra?

I am making a stack to go in the camper and need to know what we need for Far Side and/or Cabin12. What is needed:
Amp(s)
Mics (corded or wireless)
Mic stands
Amp stands
music stand
Extra mic and instrument cords

I have lots of the above but don't plan to bring anything we won't be using or that duplicates what y'all are bringing.  "Less is More"

Nina Simone often reminds me of the Harlem, Cotton Club bluesy jazz I used to see in 1930s/40s movies.  Music was good and in my mind always interrupted by the actors dialogue.  Very good, but as I said, for Trouble in Mind I like the very early versions and JLL's cover.

Since I live the closest, I can bring any equipment we might need. What do you want Shaggy? Last year you said you wanted to keep the jam volume down so I didn't bring any amps or other gear. Bruce, I have been using the Carvin PA I got from Paulies' estate, I can bring that and a small mixer. I have a small group of mics, but most are vintage, if someone has some Shure SM58 vocal mics that would be ideal.

Yes and Iโ€™m my opinion the volume last year was great, but it is a collaborative effort and we at the FarSide always appreciate the feedback and help with the jam.

I have SM58โ€™s I can bring, 2 mic stands plus cables. I will bring the Zoo and harp Mics. I will reach out to the others and see what their plans are.

My PA and speakers are too big bring. We can use yours or or Bruceโ€™s. Up to you all and appreciate the help.

I only asked for Bruceโ€™s because they may want it for Cabin 12 too. It is compact and easily transported. I understand traveling light as I always bring way too much to the Bean LOL.

Extension cords and power strips are typically slim.

Thanks again guys ๐Ÿ‘

I stuck just one mic in my bag, not a wireless, and one mic stand. I have several more if needed, let me know otherwise I will stick with that.

Packed the PA100 that we used last year. I think that was a good plan and worked well.  We had a lot less amp than previous years with that 100 watts and smaller speakers but it was surely loud enough for Farside.

For my guitar playing, I just packed the battery powered Roland that I had last year.  It was more than adequate last year.  Jim McB also has one and they are excellent for the jams.

Picked up a guitar this morning for about 10 minutes...my fingers hurt.  I need some callouses and quickly!

I like the idea of battery powered amps like the Carvin and my Roland. Cuts down on the rats nest of wires we dance on.  My mistake with the PA 100 was buying too soon. Shortly afterward, it was marketed with a battery option.

Thanks Sarge and 12-string. My troubles are tolerable. As some know, met a handful of Bean regulars at the Sweetwater Gear fest, I am handicapped from a farm accident late May. I dropped a large bobcat bucket on my right ankle. It is healing but taking much longer then expected.

The injury is far from the worst of my troubles. The company I work for has decided to start the yearly three week shutdown the week of the Bean. I managed to get away last year due to unusual low plans for that shutdown but young supervisor said 'never again, don't make plans'. I am the most senior maintenance at the plant but no pardons for 26 years served.

My eleven year old daughter has built up four year of theater experiences. She has been looking for this next play for over a year. Her last three performances are scheduled for each night of the Bean.

August 23rd, the company training department is scheduling a whole day of training for the all of the employees not involve with maintenance at the auditorium (550 employees). The Training staff expect the tech person of the auditorium (me), will work for them. I am involved with all the shutdown maintenance activities.

I am doubtful that I will be able to walk for any of these activities. Health care professionals say that I should devote much more time with my foot resting high. I am not sure what I am going to do, but its better to be wanted than not.

I don't want to give up on my cabin 11 rental so I may be putting it up to Sublet.

Any Ideas? I am open to anything, I like the retirement idea but not enough money and too young to go now.

Sorry to hear that Train. We'll definitely miss you. But as you said, its better to be wanted than the alternative.

Maybe someone on the forum will want to sublet the cabin?

Yeah Train, you need to figure out something so you don't lose that cabin, they are too hard to get sometimes. If you can find someone to pay you the rent, but keep it in your name would be great.
I hope you heal up fast and have no future issues with that ankle as you get older. When you get right down to it, you have much more important things to attend to than the bean, just not as much fun things as the bean!!!  Good luck with all of it.

Thanks Bill.  All those I think sprang from my favorites this year.  Easily played by ear also which makes transposing easy on the fly.  Hoping someone else throws out a few we can play around with this year.

For those who do want to play some of Bill's list, T for Texas was done by Jimmy Rogers in G, 11 mos 29 days works well in E, Margaritaville (which really is not a blues jam type song) plays well in D (I capo up for that sometimes).  Trouble in Mind is a good E song in my opinion.  Stand By Me plays well in C and the bass run is easy there--any key is good however that works for harmonicas or saxophone; the usual 1, minored 6, 4 and 5.

We are off to care for my Dad in Peoria Illinois area for the week. Upon return I will have enough time to mow, pull pop up out(quick check) and hop in truck to the Bean. My typical whirlwind. Fortunately I only live a couple hrs from the Bean.

Chris and I both play that song, did it together about 2-3 years ago at his camp.  Got that harp part down?

I particularly like Sara Niemietz especially backed by Marty Schwartz

Group of guys I have been rehearsing with play it as well. I haven't found a harp in any recordings on youtube, so it's up to personal interpretation.

We shall tackle it over at our camp and I have complete confidence in you.

If you play it with the guys, then you know the progression, right?

11 months and 29 days is just 12 bar blues, Johnny Paycheck does it in A. Works great as a shuffle in any key.

Stand By Me is great in C or A. We've played it at the Bean before. I used to play it with Kim and Rich.

Trouble in Mind is 8 bar blues, 1 - 5 - 1 - 4 - 1 - 5 - 1 - turnaround

Margarittaville isn't really a good jam song. Most won't know it.

Can't wait to jam with everyone :-)

T for Texas - Waylon Jennings version in A is just a 12 bar blues with a stop on the 4. And lots of harp in it!

Jimmy, may need some bass backup on Tell Me Mama (Little Walter). Key of C. Hoping Billy has some percussion Magic for that one.

Also hoping to do Oh Baby also a Little Walter tune. In F but Any key will do fine.
